Note: 40mA sounds small, but most RS485 adapters CANNOT deliver this value. If the sensor always delivers the same (wrong) value, then the power supply is not enough!
Then use an alternative 12VDC power supply with at least 3W. Also connect the ground to the RS485 adapter!
