🌱 FAQ about OpenSprinkler products
Here you will find frequently asked questions about OpenSprinkler Pro, ESP32 Upgrade Board, OpenSprinkler 3 and OSPI. Click on a question to expand the answer.
The OpenSprinkler Pro is the complete solution with a finished housing, OLED display and all functions – ready for immediate use. The ESP32 Upgrade Board is just the pure electronics (board) for upgrading an OpenSprinkler 3.3. You still need a housing and other components.
Yes, the ESP32 Upgrade Board is specifically designed to upgrade an OpenSprinkler 3.3. You can replace the old ESP8266 board with the new ESP32-C5 board. Installation requires basic knowledge of electronics.
The OpenSprinkler Pro is available in three versions:
• AC – for standard irrigation valves with 24V AC voltage (the most common variant)
• DC – for DC valves (9–24V DC), also compatible with 24VAC solenoid valves!
• Latch – for latch valves (pulse solenoid valves), ideal for energy-saving installations with battery/solar
Yes, the AC and DC versions can switch 24VAC solenoid valves. The DC version is particularly versatile and compatible with: 24VAC solenoid valves, direct current valves (9-24V DC) and 12V systems.
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) offers: higher bandwidth, better range, more stable connections and less interference than WiFi 4. The OpenSprinkler Pro with ESP32-C5 supports WiFi 6 on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The OpenSprinkler 3.4 with ESP8266 only WiFi 4 at 2.4 GHz.
Yes, the OpenSprinkler Pro has an OLED display and 3 control buttons for direct control on the device. This means you can operate the system without a smartphone or computer.
Yes, the OpenSprinkler Pro has 2 sensor inputs and supports:
• Rain sensors
• Soil moisture sensors (also RS485/Modbus such as SMT100)
• Flow sensors (for leak detection and water consumption measurement)
• BLE sensors (Bluetooth sensors)
• MQTT sensors
• Remote sensors
• RS485/Modbus sensors (via adapter)
Zigbee is a wireless protocol for low-power, long-range smart home devices. The OpenSprinkler Pro can work as a Zigbee hub or client (only with Ethernet version) and can therefore be integrated into existing Zigbee networks. This enables central control along with other smart home devices.
Yes! You can control the OpenSprinkler Pro via: the OpenSprinklerASB app (locally on WiFi or remotely), directly in the browser, or via OpenThings Cloud (OTC) for secure remote access without complicated port forwarding.
Key differences:
• Processor: OpenSprinkler 3.4 has ESP8266, OpenSprinkler Pro has ESP32-C5
• WLAN: 3.4 = WiFi 4 (2.4 GHz), Pro = WiFi 6 (2.4 & 5 GHz)
• Bluetooth: 3.4 = no, Pro = BLE 5.0
• Zigbee: 3.4 = no, Pro = yes (Ethernet version only)
• Matter: 3.4 = no, Pro = experimental
• Latch variant: 3.4 = AC/DC only, Pro = AC/DC/Latch
• RAM/Flash: 3.4 = 256KB/4MB, Pro = 8MB PSRAM/16MB Flash
Yes, the OpenSprinkler Pro is 100% compatible with the OpenSprinkler API. Existing integrations, scripts and third-party apps continue to work without adjustments.
You can use the official OpenSprinkler app - but without the advanced features. For the full range of functions (analog sensors, BLE, MQTT, extended sensors, etc.) we recommend the specially developed one OpenSprinklerASB app.
Yes, Home Assistant can be fully integrated – via the OpenSprinkler API, MQTT or (for the Ethernet version) also via Zigbee or Matter (experimental).
The OpenSprinkler Pro was developed by OpenSprinklerShop (Stefan Schmaltz) and is based on the original hardware and software from OpenSprinkler USA. The firmware is an extension of the official OpenSprinkler firmware, which has been supplemented for several years with an analog sensor interface and other functions. It is the first completely in-house development of the OpenSprinklerShop.
Yes, the firmware is completely open source and available on GitHub: github.com/OpenSprinklerShop/OpenSprinkler-firmware
Yes, 100% compatible. You can continue to use existing OpenSprinkler Zone Expanders (e.g. version 3.0 AC) as well as all OpenSprinkler accessories with the Pro. Spare parts are also available in the shop.
The OpenSprinkler Pro is an in-house development by the OpenSprinklerShop (Germany). It arose from the desire to connect more sensors to the system. Building on the OpenSprinklerShop firmware, which has been expanded for years, the brand new ESP32-C5-WROOM1 is the first proprietary hardware development - which is why it is only available from OpenSprinklerShop.
A complete wiki with all features can be found at github.com/OpenSprinklerShop/OpenSprinkler-firmware/wiki. Since the Pro is brand new, there are currently no independent reviews; A detailed operating manual is continually being updated.
Hopefully none 😉 The aim of the development was to retain the proven OpenSprinkler concept while adding many new functions (sensors, BLE, Zigbee, WiFi 6, latch variant, etc.). Because the Pro is newer and more powerful, it is slightly more expensive than the 3.4.
Unfortunately there is currently no demo mode. The suggestion has been accepted and is being considered for a future app version.
The configurator currently only selects a DIN rail holder for the controller. For Controller + Extension we recommend the Biplane mount, which accommodates both modules - this can be selected in the configurator step.
