Passwords & access in the OpenSprinkler app – an overview

Short version: As part of security measures, passwords of the... OpenThings cloud account (Login via openthings.io or OpenSprinkler.com) reset. This account is for the Remote access required on your controller. So it is affected not your shop account and not the password directly on the device. Here we explain which password applies to what and how you can get access again.

Why the confusion arises

There are all around OpenSprinkler four independent ones Accesses. They each have their own password or token and are technically linked not together. Has a reset in one place no Impact on the others:

AccessFor whatPassword/TokenReset?
Device passwordControlling the controller (locally & via app)Device password (default: opendoor)No
OpenThings cloud accountRemote access on the go (openthings.io / OpenSprinkler.com)Account login (email + password)Yes
Third Party Accountse.g. B. Gardena, weather servicesLogin to the respective providerNo
Shop/Support AccountOrders, invoices, supportAccount password on OpenSprinklerShop.deNo

Important: Only that was reset OpenThings cloud account (remote access). Your local controller, the device password and your shop account are not affected and function unchanged.

The initial setup wizard: Add device

When you first start the app – or at any time later “Add device” – an assistant guides you step by step to your controller. This is exactly where you encounter the above-mentioned entrances for the first time, so it's worth taking a quick overview:

Step 1: Select connection type

  • On the network (recommended for home): Are the cell phone and controller included? same WiFi, the app finds the device automatically. Simply select from the list.
  • Add manually: You give it IP address or web address (URL) of the controller directly - practical if the automatic search doesn't find anything or you use a fixed IP.
  • OTC connection (remote access): For access on the go you add yours OTC tokens from the OpenThings cloud (see Section 2).

Step 2: Enter device password

After connecting, the assistant asks this Device password away. It says this from the factory opendoor. The app remembers the password for this controller so you don't have to re-enter it every time you open it.

Brand new controller?

At a brand new device you bring it into the network first: via Ethernet cable or about the WiFi facility of the controller. If the network connection is established, the controller appears in the wizard under “In the network” and you complete the setup as described above. You can add remote access (OTC) at any time later.

In short: First bring it into the network → add in the wizard → enter the device password. Remote access via the OpenThings cloud is an optional final step.

1. The device password (control of the controller)

The Device password protects your OpenSprinkler controller itself. It will directly on the device stored – not in a cloud. The app queries it once when adding a controller and then saves it locally.

  • Factory default password: opendoor
  • Storage: encrypted (as MD5 hash) on the controller
  • Applies to: operation in the home network and via the app
  • Affected by the reset: no

Change device password

  1. Open app → Settings (gear) → area Advanced / Network
  2. Point “Change device password” choose
  3. News Enter password, then new Confirm password twice
  4. Save - the app automatically applies the new password to this controller

Forgotten device password? Since it is solely on the device, only one helps Factory reset on the controller (reset button). Then applies again opendoor. Back up your irrigation programs via export beforehand – if they are still accessible.

2. The OpenThings Cloud account – this has been reset

If you have your controller on the go reached, it overflows OTC (OpenThings Cloud). This includes one Account on openthings.io (or OpenSprinkler.com), where you register your devices and the OTC tokens for remote access. This exact account password has been reset - That's why there are currently access problems with remote access.

This is how you get your remote access back

  1. Opens the portal openthings.io (or login via OpenSprinkler.com)
  2. Chooses “Forgot your password?” and enter your cloud account email address
  3. On the Reset link Enter a new password and log in
  4. Check your devices and the associated ones there OTC tokens

The OTC tokens itself has the format OT followed by 30 characters. You enter it once in the app: Location → “Add OTC connection” → Insert token. If your token has changed, simply update it here.

Note: OpenThings Cloud Account = Remote Access Management. Device password = key for the device itself. Both are independent - a new cloud password does not change your device password.

3. Third-party accounts (Gardena, weather services, etc.)

Do you integrate external services – for example Gardena (via secure OAuth login) or one Weather Service – you get in touch with them Access data of the respective provider to. These passwords are not managed by OpenSprinkler, but by the third party. Nothing was affected by this.

4. The shop/support account (not affected)

your account OpenSprinklerShop.de serves for Orders, invoices and support tickets. It has nothing to do with your controller or remote access and was not reset. You can register there as usual. If you ever forget your shop password, just use it My account → “Forgot your password?”.
