Frost protection – root heating

Plants sensitive to frost

Root heating protects frost-sensitive plants, especially Mediterranean species such as palm trees and olive trees, from frost damage in the European winter by protecting the roots from freezing. Since the ground freezes and the plants cannot absorb the water, which leads to drying out, or the cells are destroyed by frost damage, heating the root zone is important. Root heating can prevent this by providing gentle, constant heat and ensure the survival of the plant.

Why root heating is necessary in winter:

Frost damage to the roots:

The roots are the most sensitive part of the plant and can freeze at low temperatures.

Frost drying:

During the winter, evergreen plants continue to evaporate water, but when the ground is frozen, they cannot absorb new water. The result is frost drying, which causes the plant to dry out.

Metabolic processes:

Cold and frost affect the plant's vital metabolic processes, affecting its growth and health.

Technical realization:

Even if the OpenSprinkler does not control irrigation in winter, together with an SMT50 or SMT100 it can measure the soil temperature - and now also control it!

With the advanced features of the Analog Sensor API, you can use “control and control” to control a heating element based on the floor temperature
